Spelman College Names 54-Year-Old A.I. Expert Ayanna Howard as President

Ayanna M. Howard, 54, will become Spelman College’s next president, giving the 145-year-old historically Black women’s college a roboticist and A.I. expert as its new leader.
Howard, now dean of Ohio State University’s engineering college, marks a break from Spelman’s recent presidents, who came from fields including medicine, anthropology and psychology.
About 2,700 students attend Spelman, and Howard said the college’s small size and academic rigor could help it adapt its curriculum and teaching to the A.I. era.
Howard said any changes would stay rooted in Spelman’s liberal arts mission, with students and faculty helping examine not just what A.I. can do, but what it should do.
