House Panel Approves $125 Million Pentagon Rename to Department of War

House Armed Services Committee approved an amendment from Rep. Ronny Jackson to make Trump’s “Department of War” label the Pentagon’s formal legal name.
Trump had already authorized the term by executive order last September, but Congress must change the statute before the Department of Defense can be permanently renamed.
Ronny Jackson, Trump and Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth cast the shift as a tougher signal of U.S. resolve, while top committee Democrat Adam Smith called it “semantic nonsense.”
The proposal still faces the Senate, where it is likely to need Democratic support, and opponents cite a Congressional Budget Office estimate that a full renaming could cost up to $125 million.
