Summary
Interstate 290 reopened Thursday evening after authorities towed a suspicious Volkswagen Atlas and ended an about eight-hour closure in both directions near Interstate 294.
The shutdown began around 10:05 a.m. when Illinois State Police responded to a death investigation on the westbound side near Mannheim Road; the SUV was under a tarp and appeared to have blown-out windows.
By 11:30 a.m., a bomb squad was opening the vehicle as FBI agents joined state and local police, with ATF also assisting later in the day.
Authorities confirmed one fatality but have not disclosed how the person died, while Westchester police and the FBI said there was no known threat to the public.
The closure stranded drivers for miles and also shut the eastbound I-88 ramp to I-290, adding to a day that already saw separate crashes on the Eisenhower Expressway.
