Six holes into Thursday's opening round at Riviera, Nelly Korda changed out of custom golf shoes gifted by LeBron James and returned to her usual Nike pair.
Golf Channel reported the shoes were "a little bit too loose," with the fit potentially contributing to swing issues as the world No. 1 slipped to 1-over early.
Korda's trainer retrieved her regular shoes from the locker room and made the swap on the 16th hole; she then parred 16 and made the turn at 1-over.
The shoe change came after Korda had thanked James for the gift on Instagram, with James replying to wish her luck in the major.
Korda arrived at Riviera as the clear favorite for a first U.S. Women's Open title, carrying three wins and three runner-up finishes in seven starts this season.
