Summary
Heavy rain from Jangmi pushed into the Tokyo region on Wednesday, flooding streets, disrupting road traffic and prompting shelter advice for residents near the Zenpukuji River.
More than 5,000 homes lost power, while hundreds of flights were canceled and train services were suspended or delayed as the storm crossed east-central Japan.
Jangmi was east of Shima city by midmorning with maximum sustained winds of 90 kph, after making landfall in Wakayama at typhoon strength of 126 kph before weakening inland.
The Japan Meteorological Agency issued top-level flood warnings in parts of central and eastern Japan after 50 centimeters of rain fell in Owase in 24 hours, with up to 20 centimeters more forecast in some areas including Tokyo.
Earlier, the storm hit Okinawa and left 15 people with minor injuries, adding to broader nationwide disruption that had already included mass flight cancellations and factory stoppages.
