OpenAI Rolls Out Active Sessions to 1 Billion ChatGPT Users as Enterprises Press for Governance Controls

OpenAI has launched Active sessions across all ChatGPT account and workspace types, letting users and admins review active logins and sign out specific devices or all sessions.
The feature surfaces browser or app details, approximate location, sign-in time, trusted-device status and current-session status across ChatGPT, Codex and the API Platform; full logout can take up to 30 minutes.
OpenAI said the tool has limits: session data may be approximate, and it does not cover connected apps, third-party sign-ins, Codex CLI sessions, recently ended sessions or enterprise SSO accounts using SAML or OIDC.
Security experts called the control overdue but useful, saying granular session visibility helps detect unauthorized access, end stale sessions and support investigations more cleanly than password resets.
The rollout comes as enterprises struggle to govern OpenAI’s fast model changes, including last week’s GPT-5.5 Instant update, which can outpace testing, compliance reviews and change-management processes.
