Anthropic Caps Claude Free Use at 15-40 Messages per 5 Hours, Withholds Opus 4.8

Summary
Anthropic says most Claude free users can expect roughly 15 to 40 messages in a rolling five-hour window, though heavy prompts, large attachments or peak demand can cut that sharply.
Those limits vary because each prompt carries a different token and inference cost; Anthropic also sets a 200,000-token context cap outside Enterprise plans and says higher-effort reasoning uses quotas faster.
Free accounts get Sonnet 4.6 and Haiku 4.5, plus web search, Projects, Artifacts and file uploads of up to 20 files per chat and 500MB per file.
Opus 4.8, Claude Code, Claude Cowork and Claude Design remain paid-only, leaving free users with standard chat and coding help but not Anthropic's flagship model or agent tools.
Anthropic also says Claude stays ad-free, while some users may need to manually opt out of model training in privacy settings.
