Summary
Around 4:20 a.m. Wednesday, FBI personnel shot and killed a man who had held several people inside a downtown Bakersfield office building for more than 15 hours; all hostages were found unharmed.
The standoff began about 1 p.m. Tuesday after police answered a bomb-threat call at the four-story Chase Bank building, where the suspect barricaded himself inside with hostages.
Two hostages were released Tuesday night after phone negotiations with Bakersfield police's crisis team, but the remaining captives stayed inside until the shooting ended the siege.
Nearby City Hall, police headquarters and other buildings were evacuated, roads were closed and officers sealed off the area around the building, which also houses a school district office.
