HKUST Draws 1,800 to Unicorn Day, Signs 6 Partnerships to Speed Research Commercialization

More than 1,800 participants joined HKUST’s annual Unicorn Day, where the university used the event to deepen industry links and push research toward commercial use.
Six strategic collaboration agreements were signed with partners including Samsung R&D Institute China–Guangzhou, China Everbright Water and InnoAngel to support talent development, industry-academia integration and technology translation.

An Elsevier-prepared report released at the event said HKUST’s research output grew 10% on average over five years, with 6.2% involving industry collaboration versus a 2.7% global average.
The university said those efforts have produced about 1,670 patent applications, 700 grants and more than 1,900 active startups founded by HKUST members, including 11 unicorns and 22 exits as of May 2026.
