Toby Doeden Reaches July South Dakota GOP Runoff as 2nd Spot Stays Too Close to Call

Toby Doeden secured a place in South Dakota’s July Republican gubernatorial runoff, while the battle for the second slot remained unresolved overnight Wednesday.
The unsettled second berth left Gov. Larry Rhoden, U.S. Rep. Dusty Johnson and House Speaker Jon Hansen still competing to face Doeden in the next round.
Doeden, a businessman who largely self-funded his campaign, ran as a populist outsider and cast himself as a conservative alternative to the Pierre establishment.
The result marked a setback for Rhoden, who succeeded Kristi Noem and had argued Trump’s lack of endorsement reflected caution in a crowded four-way primary.
