Antonio Villaraigosa conceded California's gubernatorial race after early returns showed him winning just 1% of the vote.
In a statement, the former Los Angeles mayor said the result was not what he had hoped for and congratulated the candidates advancing to the November general election.
Villaraigosa framed his campaign around fixing California's problems and pointed to his record in Los Angeles, including public safety, school improvements and port environmental gains.
The concession effectively ends his bid in the primary stage and clears the field for the remaining contenders heading into the general election.
