Technical talks on Hungarian minority rights in Ukraine could conclude this week, with Peter Magyar saying he is "very optimistic" and ready to meet Volodymyr Zelenskyy early next week if guarantees are secured.
A deal would let Hungary lift its veto on opening Ukraine's first EU accession cluster by 16 June, ending months of deadlock and likely advancing Moldova's bid alongside Kyiv's.
An 18 June EU summit draft seen by Euronews references Ukraine's accession path, and an EU official said preparations are proceeding on the assumption the dispute will be settled.
Significant technical steps still remain: the General Affairs Council must launch the process, Ukraine and Moldova must reply to a Council letter, and member-state ambassadors must approve the next move.
The breakthrough would mark a sharp turn after Budapest blocked talks since 2024 over Hungarian-language education rights, with EU officials now pushing to open one cluster in June and five more in July.
