Tom Kean Jr. secured New Jersey’s Republican nomination Tuesday despite not being seen publicly since March 5 and missing more than 100 House votes.
Trump’s endorsement came a day earlier, calling Kean a strong backer of his America First agenda; Kean also faced no primary challenger.
Kean’s office said in April he was recovering from a medical issue, and he later told local media he expected to return to voting and campaigning within weeks.
Rebecca Bennett, a former Navy helicopter pilot, won the Democratic primary and will face Kean in November in a swing district critical to control of Congress.
Kean’s prolonged absence has drawn national attention, turning a routine renomination into a test of how much mystery Republican voters will tolerate in a key midterm race.
