Wasserman Schultz Jumps to Florida's 20th District After GOP Map Cut Her 2024 Margin by 14 Points

Debbie Wasserman Schultz will run in Florida’s vacant 20th District after Republicans redrew her 25th into a far tougher seat, turning a district Kamala Harris carried by 5 points into one she lost by 9.
The move gives the 20-year incumbent a much safer path: Harris won the new 20th by about 37 points in 2024, and PlanScore estimates Democrats have better than 99% odds there versus roughly 20% in her remade district.
Florida Democrats and Black leaders have attacked the switch because the 20th is one of the state’s few remaining majority-Black seats and was long held by Black lawmakers; the state Black Caucus called her decision “disheartening.”
The seat opened in April when Shelia Cherfilus-McCormick resigned amid an indictment tied to alleged disaster-relief theft, setting up an Aug. 18 Democratic primary that will likely decide the next member of Congress.
The fight has widened into a debate over whether protecting Black political power requires a Black representative, or whether Black voters in a heavily Democratic district should simply choose the candidate they prefer.
