Five passengers exposed on a cruise ship to the Andes strain of hantavirus left Nebraska Medicine’s quarantine unit and returned to their home states, the hospital said Tuesday.
The departures came after about three weeks, even though all 18 potentially exposed passengers had been strongly encouraged to remain for the full 42-day monitoring period.
Nebraska Medicine said the five will still be monitored for the next 21 days by local and state public health departments.
The early exits leave 13 potentially exposed passengers still tied to the Nebraska quarantine effort as officials continue tracking a rare, high-risk virus exposure.
