UChicago Lab Schools Removes Pride Flag After 2022 Display, Citing Neutrality Policy

University of Chicago Laboratory Schools will not fly an LGBTQ pride flag this Pride Month, ending a practice that had continued since 2022.
Administrators said a flagpole display is reasonably read as institutional speech, and concluded the Pride flag conflicts with the university’s Kalven Committee neutrality principles and a new school neutrality policy adopted last month.
Interim Director Ethan Bueno de Mesquita said student groups remain free to advocate for flying the flag, while stressing that LGBTQ+ people’s full membership in the school community is a core value.
The decision drew criticism from the University of Chicago’s AAUP chapter, which argued that displaying symbols affirming students’ dignity should not be treated as a political stance.
