$2 billion in federal Medicaid funds was improperly spent on illegal immigrants, CMS Administrator Dr. Oz said, as the Trump administration rolled out a broader Medicaid overhaul.
The plan pairs that crackdown with a new requirement that able-bodied recipients work, volunteer or study for 20 hours a week to keep coverage.
California is a central target: CMS said the state owes the federal government $2 billion tied to Medi-Cal spending, and about half has already been recouped.
Oz said states should not use federal money for benefits beyond national policy, arguing such spending shifts costs to taxpayers nationwide and warning unchecked abuse could add $5.4 trillion over a decade.
