Tuesday's Los Angeles County sheriff primary puts incumbent Robert Luna on the ballot against seven challengers, including former Sheriff Alex Villanueva, whom he defeated in 2022.
A majority win would secure reelection outright; otherwise, the top two finishers advance to a November runoff, setting up a possible Luna-Villanueva rematch.
Luna enters the race with broad institutional backing, including endorsements from Mayor Karen Bass and Democratic Party organizations, according to UCLA public policy lecturer Jim Newton.
Newton said Luna appears well positioned if the contest narrows to Villanueva again, though the large field leaves room for an upset and could complicate a first-round victory.
