A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck about 10 miles southwest of Saracena at 12:12 a.m. UTC, rattling southern Italy's Calabria region.
USGS said the quake was unusually deep—more than 153 miles down—and produced light intensity IV shaking, enough to wake some residents and rattle doors, windows and dishes.
Authorities reported no immediate injuries or damage and said they were monitoring the area for any additional seismic activity.
Italy experiences frequent earthquakes; last month a 4.1-magnitude tremor shook Bacoli as the country heads into the summer tourism season.
