July 24 will bring a second White House Correspondents’ Dinner after April’s event was cut short by gunfire at the Washington Hilton, with Donald Trump saying he has accepted an invitation to speak.
WHCA President Weijia Jiang said the decision was not automatic and that the new event will use significantly enhanced safety measures, new access procedures and a more intimate format.
The association said it raised funds to cover the second dinner for members who bought tickets to the first event and plans travel support for scholarship winners returning to Washington.
April 25 ended in chaos when a gunman opened fire near the ballroom, forcing Trump, Vice President JD Vance and Cabinet members out as journalists and guests took cover under tables.
The accused man, charged with trying to kill Trump with loaded firearms and knives, has pleaded not guilty to four counts as organizers cast the redo as a stand against intimidation of the press.
