Jared Verse was the piece that turned the Rams-Browns blockbuster from a hypothetical into a completed deal, Browns GM Andrew Berry said Tuesday, even though Myles Garrett remained the headline name.
Berry said the 25-year-old edge rusher lets Cleveland keep its defense at a high level instead of fully sacrificing the present for future assets, calling him a strong fit against both the run and pass.
Verse, the No. 19 pick in 2024, has 12.0 sacks, 22 tackles for loss and 45 quarterback hits in two seasons, with Berry noting his defensive rookie of the year award and two original-ballot Pro Bowls.
The Ohio native from Dayton has already told the Browns he is eager to join the scheme, giving Cleveland both a local connection and a young pass rusher at a premium position.
