Rachel Smith's CT Scan Finds 1cm Lung Mass as Cancer Status Remains Unclear

End-of-May test results ruled out breast, reproductive and thyroid cancers for Rachel Smith, but doctors still could not determine whether the 1-centimeter mass in her left lung is lung cancer.
A biopsy is planned, though Smith said the sample may be unusable because masses under 1 centimeter are hard to biopsy; a backup PET scan is scheduled for late July.
The mass was discovered after Smith, 33, went to a hospital on April 13 for severe back pain from a slipped disc suffered while helping an injured child at a soft-play party.
Smith, a Texas single mother and breast cancer survivor diagnosed at 28, said the finding could still prove to be early-stage lung cancer, scar tissue or another non-breast-cancer condition.
