September 2025 became the turning point when Frank Ames went to check on Paul Trahan, 87, after not seeing him for a while and found him incoherent in a filthy Manhattan apartment.
Rotting food, rat feces and Trahan’s inability to urinate for days convinced Ames to call 911 immediately and send him to a hospital.
The rescue grew out of a friendship formed over chess games in Central Park, linking Ames, Trahan and Lincoln Cyrus, a homeless man living on 59th Street.
The New York story frames that apartment visit as the start of an unlikely chain of events that ultimately saved one life, and possibly two, while underscoring the risks of elderly isolation.
