Five research aircraft based at Ellington Airport will fly repeated survey patterns over Houston and the nearby Gulf coast from June 3 to June 13 under NASA’s Student Airborne Research Program.
One plane — NOAA’s WP-3D Orion hurricane hunter — will make the lowest passes at about 1,000 feet, while the rest operate higher with instruments including lidars, radar and spectrometers.
NASA said the flights will help map atmospheric gases and particles, track changes in the lowest coastal atmosphere, and study natural processes affecting land and water in the region.
The mission is part of SARP, an eight-week summer internship that gives undergraduate students hands-on access to airborne science and field research.
