OpenAI said it will take part in the G7 leaders’ summit in Évian later this month to push coordinated youth AI safety standards and call for an international institute to sustain work beyond the meeting.
Nine principles released with the announcement urge age detection for minors, annual risk assessments, parental controls, stronger crisis protocols, privacy protections, AI literacy and independent audits across jurisdictions.
OpenAI said ChatGPT already applies stronger safeguards for users under 18 or when age is uncertain, including parental notifications, tighter limits around self-harm and graphic content, and age-prediction systems.
The company framed the proposal as a way to turn scattered efforts into durable global guidance, citing work with Common Sense Media, the American Federation of Teachers and Estonia’s school rollout with Stanford researchers.
In Paris alongside the summit, OpenAI will also host a forum with French officials, educators, researchers and civil society groups on translating shared youth safety goals into practical standards and implementation.

Youth AI Safety in 2026: G7’s Historic Accord, OpenAI’s Teen Blueprint, and the Push for Global Standards
Overview
In May 2026, the G7 Digital Ministers reached a historic agreement in Paris to protect children and young people from online harms, marking a major step toward global standards for youth AI safety. They adopted shared principles to address digital threats like exploitation and harmful content, with a strong focus on promoting digital literacy and tackling risks from AI chatbots. The G7 also called for stricter safety measures on online platforms, encouraging proactive safety-by-design and robust content moderation. This unified approach aims to create a safer digital environment for minors worldwide through coordinated international action.
