Nearly three months after his last public appearance, Rep. Tom Kean Jr. remained out of sight ahead of New Jersey's June 3 Republican primary, with no public explanation beyond an undisclosed medical issue.
March 5 was the last day Kean voted in Congress, and his aides have said since April only that he faces a personal medical problem, is expected to recover fully and return soon.
New Jersey Republicans said the absence became more alarming after Easter when colleagues reported they had not been told where he was and party leaders said their texts went unanswered.
Tuesday's primary still poses no Republican challenge for Kean, whose only known campaign activity was phone calls in which he asked one local party chairman for prayers.
The unexplained disappearance has turned into a political mystery in New Jersey, raising questions about transparency from a sitting congressman seeking another term.
