Freedom Plaza received a new patriotic installation from the Interior Department: a statue of Caesar Rodney alongside 12 bronze Revolutionary War soldiers, with a ribbon-cutting planned in downtown Washington.
The exhibit is part of Trump’s push to restore classical design in the capital and frame public spaces around the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, according to administration officials.
Caesar Rodney’s statue was moved from Wilmington, where it was removed in 2020 during monument disputes over historical figures linked to slavery; Rodney is known for his roughly 80-mile ride to back independence in 1776.
The choice of Freedom Plaza also recasts a site long tied to Occupy D.C., 2020 protest staging and homeless encampments, following recent federal crackdowns and the 2025 dismantling of Black Lives Matter Plaza nearby.
