New York’s Public Theater has opened the long-gestating Girl, Interrupted musical, adapting Susanna Kaysen’s 1993 memoir after roughly a decade of development.
Juliana Canfield plays Susanna and pop star King Princess makes her stage debut as Lisa, with the production drawing on the memoir rather than the 1999 film that starred Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie.
Martyna Majok framed the 2-hour show as a memory play shifting between older and younger Susanna, using a stark institutional set, live folk music and an ensemble focused on five female patients.
The adaptation arrives as its cast argues the story’s themes of mental illness, female autonomy and finding community still resonate, and it runs in New York through July 12.
