Sir Kenny Dalglish, 75, said he is undergoing cancer treatment and that it is "going well" after an inadvertent social media post forced him to confirm the diagnosis.
Dalglish said he had wanted to keep the matter private, joking that his "useless technology skills" had forced his hand, and asked for privacy for himself and his family.
Liverpool backed that request, saying the support and love of everyone at the club are with Dalglish and his family.
Dalglish is one of British football's most decorated figures, scoring 167 goals in 320 games for Celtic, making 515 appearances for Liverpool and netting 30 goals in 102 Scotland caps.
