Lombard Odier Warns Swiss 10-Million Population Cap Would Trigger Economic Fallout

Economic damage would be hard to avoid if Switzerland enforces a proposal to cap its population at 10 million, Lombard Odier said in a client note.
Strict limits required by the measure would leave less room for the pragmatic implementation Switzerland has used to soften contentious referendum outcomes.
The bank pointed to a 2014 vote as precedent: Bern preserved key parts of its EU free-movement arrangement even after approving tighter immigration curbs.
That history suggests the new cap could prove harder to dilute, raising the risk of broader fallout for the Swiss economy.
