Tuesday's announcement will restart a one-mile busway on 34th Street between Third and Ninth Avenues, reserving lanes for buses, emergency vehicles and trucks during peak hours.
Mamdani is reviving a project the city halted seven months ago after the Trump administration warned it not to proceed and the Federal Highway Administration threatened to withhold unspecified funding.
The mayor cast the redesign as part of his pledge to deliver faster, free buses in a city with some of the slowest bus service in the U.S.
Similar busway projects elsewhere in New York City have already improved traffic speeds, giving the administration evidence the 34th Street corridor could move more efficiently.
