Typhoon Jangmi intensified Saturday a few hundred miles west of Guam after low wind shear and warm waters helped it organize.
Japan’s Ryukyu Islands already took hurricane-force winds and heavy rain, with gusts reaching 74 mph at Kadena Air Base and 77 mph at Naha airport in Okinawa.
By Tuesday, Jangmi is forecast to weaken as it reaches mainland Japan, but Osaka, Hamamatsu and Tokyo could still see heavy rain and wind gusts above 50 mph.
The storm follows April’s Super Typhoon Sinlaku, which hit 175 mph and caused major damage in Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, underscoring an already active West Pacific season.
