A 25% tariff proposal on Brazilian goods was unveiled by the U.S. Trade Representative under Section 301, marking a new trade action against Latin America's largest economy.
The USTR said Brazil engaged in practices that are "unreasonable and burden or restrict U.S. commerce," citing anti-corruption enforcement, intellectual property protection, ethanol market access and illegal deforestation.
Jamieson Greer said the investigation was launched at President Donald Trump's direction, tying the proposed duties directly to the administration's trade agenda.
Greer said Trump and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva have held several constructive meetings, but substantial differences remain unresolved, leaving the tariff threat in place.
