Tammy Jo Baker, 62, died Monday after a pickup truck slammed into her toll booth at the Dunlawton Avenue beach access ramp in Daytona Beach Shores around 12:40 p.m.
Sheriff Mike Chitwood said the driver was likely traveling about 40 mph, crushing and flipping the booth; Baker was pronounced dead at the scene after lifeguards tried CPR.
Deanna Harrell, 35, then drove toward the water, tried to turn around and got stuck in the sand, where bystanders pulled her from the truck.
Authorities said a heavy odor of alcohol came from the vehicle, and Harrell was being tested for possible impairment as investigators examined the fatal crash.
The driver had a known risk history. Could this deadly beach crash have been prevented?
A 40 mph crash at a toll booth raises a question: Is Florida's beach driving tradition too dangerous to continue?
