Iraqi officials said a second blast on the cargo vessel was caused by a drone, after an earlier projectile strike on the ship’s starboard side about 40 nautical miles southeast of Umm Qasr.
UKMTO had first reported a large explosion from an unidentified projectile; an Iraqi maritime patrol member said responders then heard a drone overhead before another powerful blast ignited a fire.
The fire was later brought under control, and officials said no claimant had emerged and the vessel’s identity was still unknown.
The attack adds to shipping tensions in the region after Iranian state media said earlier this week security forces fired warning shots at four ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
