More than 1 million viewers tuned in after just three days' notice as nine internet personalities raced Citroën Ami microcars for 100 laps at a French velodrome.
Sylvain Levy staged the event, called La Course, at the 445-meter Stade Isidore Thivrier oval in Commentry and streamed it on Twitch with professional-style graphics and drone coverage.
The 8-hp electric Amis were reportedly unlocked from 28 mph to 43 mph, creating drafting, side-by-side racing and late-lap energy management because the cars could not run flat out for the full 27.7 miles.
France already has a market for creator-led motorsport: GP Explorer drew 80,000 spectators and more than 2 million combined online and TV viewers last year.
