South Carolina Sends Alex Murdaugh Murder Case Back for Retrial, Targeting Trial Before January 2027

A May 29 remittitur formally returned Alex Murdaugh’s double-murder case to the trial court, starting the retrial process after the state Supreme Court overturned his convictions.
The justices unanimously reversed the 2023 verdict because they found Colleton County Clerk Becky Hill improperly influenced jurors during the six-week trial.
Lower-court proceedings now are expected to include hearings, renewed pretrial motions, evidence disputes and eventually a new trial date rather than an immediate retrial.
Attorney General Alan Wilson said prosecutors hope to retry the case before January 2027, while the defense plans to seek a venue change, attorney-led jury questioning and possibly juror sequestration.
Murdaugh, once sentenced to double life for the 2021 killings of his wife Maggie and son Paul, still remains in prison on separate financial-crimes sentences.
