Linda McMahon said California’s revived “shared podium” approach still violates Title IX, arguing girls should not have to compete against biological males or share winners’ spots.
AB Hernandez’s weekend performance at the California state track and field championships sharpened the dispute after the athlete won the girls’ high jump and triple jump and finished third in the long jump.
McMahon also pressed Gov. Gavin Newsom to “pick a side,” noting he called male participation in women’s sports “deeply unfair” in March 2025 but has not moved to reverse California’s policy.
The administration has already escalated the fight beyond rhetoric: the Education Department found California and the CIF in violation in June 2025, and the Justice Department sued the state the next month.
Using June as “Title IX Month,” McMahon said the administration wants schools nationwide to adopt sex-based protections in sports and private spaces, pointing to Penn’s apology and restored records in the Lia Thomas case as a model.
