Rosario "Pete" Vasquez will take over the U.S. Border Patrol after Mike Banks stepped down immediately, ending a 37-year career and handing over command of nearly 20,000 agents and staff.
Vasquez brings more than 26 years in Border Patrol and CBP roles, most recently running the Blaine Sector on the U.S.-Canada border and coordinating with federal, tribal and international partners.
His portfolio now spans nearly 7,000 miles of land borders and about 2,000 miles of coastal waters, with CBP saying he will focus on transnational criminal groups, human smuggling and narcotics trafficking.
Banks, who led the agency during Trump's second administration, said he was leaving after helping turn the border from "chaotic" into the "most secure" in U.S. history.
The leadership change comes as CBP and ICE face funding uncertainty, putting added attention on how the administration sustains its border security push.
