Three rarely seen Bruno Bernard photographs are being highlighted for Marilyn Monroe’s June 1 centennial, tracing her path from Norma Jeane to Hollywood icon.
The images span 1949 to 1955 and include a relaxed Palm Springs portrait, a 1953 Hollywood Bowl appearance in a borrowed dress, and a pensive moment during The Seven Year Itch shoot.
Bernard met Monroe in the mid-1940s when she was still a struggling actress, and a new book, The Marilyn Monroe Century, uses his work to frame her life and career.
Joshua John Miller, Bernard’s grandson, says the photographer and Monroe bonded over childhood hardship and displacement, a connection he argues is visible in the intimacy of the pictures.
