Wagoner County Sheriff's Office warned residents that scammers are using AI to extract partial fingerprint patterns from high-quality social media selfies, especially photos showing peace signs or clear fingertips.
Those biometric details can potentially help criminals bypass fingerprint locks on phones, banking apps and other personal devices, then support phishing, identity theft, fake account recovery and impersonation fraud.
The sheriff's office urged people to avoid posting close-up hand photos, tighten social media privacy settings, use strong passwords and multi-factor authentication, and watch accounts for suspicious activity.
The warning aligns with broader FBI and cybersecurity alerts that AI is making scams harder to detect, including deepfake schemes, phishing attempts and other biometric fraud.
