Old Bailey prosecutors said Abdullah Hayayei, 36, died in July 2017 after a 25kg metal bar struck his head when a shot-put cage collapsed during training in London.
Missing base supports and bolts left the cage unstable in wind, the court heard, with prosecutors calling it an "accident waiting to happen" caused by gross negligence.
UK Athletics has pleaded guilty to corporate manslaughter and former head of sport Keith Davies, 78, to a health and safety offence; prosecutors said he knew the cage was wrongly assembled.
Hayayei's widow told the court she was left alone with five young children, while prosecutors also accused UK Athletics of later trying to shift blame onto Davies and the Newham venue.
Judge Richard Marks is due to deliver sentence on Tuesday in a case tied to preparations for the World Para Athletics Championships.
