Spring 2026 was the warmest on record in England and Wales, the Met Office said, with March through May also placing in the UK's top 10 warmest since records began in 1884.
Late-May heat drove the milestone, shattering temperature records across the UK and bringing six consecutive days above 30C in some areas.
Sunshine was also unusually strong: all four UK nations were above average, leaving the UK with its fourth sunniest spring since records began in 1910.
Southern and eastern England were extremely dry, with Kent and Cambridgeshire getting about one-third of expected rainfall and Shoeburyness only 26%, raising water-demand and reservoir concerns.
The Met Office said the pattern fits a longer warming trend: the UK's average temperature is about 1.2C above pre-industrial levels, and the three warmest springs on record are now 2026, 2025 and 2024.
