Zohran Mamdani opened June 1 Pride Month with an X post saying one 30-day celebration cannot fully recognize queer and transgender New Yorkers' contributions to the city.
Mamdani tied that message to a long historical arc, citing the 1895 Cercle Hermaphroditos, Harlem Renaissance drag balls, the Stonewall uprising, the Lesbian Herstory Archives and ACT UP's 1987 founding.
He paired the tribute with a policy note, saying queer and trans residents deserve a city where they can afford to live safely, openly and joyfully.
Other Democrats echoed the start-of-month message, with the Democratic National Committee, Nancy Pelosi and Kamala Harris posting support for Pride and LGBTQ+ equality.
