June 2 will bring a full Marathon progression wipe—loot, faction levels and other advancement reset—as Bungie launches Season 2 and opens the game free to all players for its first week.
Season 2 is meant to address a sharp player drop after the March launch, with Bungie acknowledging the extraction shooter has felt overly punishing, confusing to learn and too demanding of players’ time.
Bungie says the update will speed faction progression, shift runner upgrades into a new buildcrafting system called the Cradle and add experimental queues that reduce or remove competitive PvP.
The overhaul carries added weight because Bungie recently said it would end active development on Destiny 2 after more than 12 years, leaving Marathon’s recovery central to the studio’s future.
