More than 1,500 pages of Peter Mandelson’s private messages published Monday laid bare criticism of Keir Starmer from figures close to the prime minister.
Pat McFadden, then a Cabinet Office minister, was shown agreeing with Mandelson’s view that Starmer did not know what he stood for and that others around him were similarly unclear.
The messages also said Starmer’s then-chief of staff Morgan McSweeney described the premier’s political style as “advance/buckle/advance/buckle,” reinforcing doubts about his leadership.
Gordon Brown — appointed only weeks ago as a Starmer adviser — was accused in the exchanges of trying to destabilize the man he now serves, widening the sense of internal Labour strain.
