A tiny Game Boy-style music player has gone on sale as a 30th-anniversary Pokémon collectible, bundled with 45 miniature cartridges that each trigger a track or sound effect from the 1996 original game.
The songs are stored in the device itself: each plastic cartridge uses a different contact pattern to press six pins in the slot, cueing music from an "audio tour through Kanto."
Three LR44 batteries power the jukebox, but its D-pad and buttons are decorative only, there is no headphone jack, and the low-tech speaker limits audio quality.
The release leans heavily on nostalgia, with cartridge backs showing game scenes that appear in the unit's screen window, underscoring Nintendo and The Pokémon Company's focus on commemorative merchandise rather than a functional micro handheld.
Is Nintendo’s Game Boy Jukebox a clever retro tribute or a missed opportunity for a true classic revival?
In an age of endless streaming, why are we craving limited, physical media from our past more than ever?
