VoteVets Pours $9.9 Million Into Josh Turek's Iowa Senate Bid as Primary Nears

$9.9 million in VoteVets advertising and mailers has swamped Iowa’s Democratic Senate primary, giving Josh Turek outside support worth more than 3.5 times the combined spending of his and Zach Wahls’ campaigns.
VoteVets said it chose Turek because his father’s Agent Orange exposure led to Turek being born with spina bifida, arguing he understands the generational costs of war despite not being a veteran.
That spending has become a campaign issue itself: Wahls allies call it unprecedented in Iowa, and Wahls says the group is effectively helping Turek on behalf of Chuck Schumer after the leader’s PAC donated to him.
The money fight is likely to continue beyond Tuesday’s primary, with the GOP’s Senate Leadership Fund already reserving $29 million for Rep. Ashley Hinson and the Schumer-aligned Senate Majority PAC pledging $13.4 million to flip the seat.
With unprecedented outside cash flooding Iowa, what does it now take to truly win a voter's trust?
