Pittsburgh put Carmen Mlodzinski on the restricted list Sunday after GM Ben Cherington said the right-hander was not ready to pitch when the club needed him.
Jared Jones' return from the 60-day injured list on Friday pushed Mlodzinski out of the rotation, and the 26-year-old had openly voiced disappointment about moving back into a relief role.
Cam Sanders was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis to replace him, and the move opened a 40-man roster spot; Mlodzinski is expected back Tuesday.
Mlodzinski has a 3.76 ERA over 55 innings in 11 games this season and remains under Pirates control through 2029, limiting any leverage as he tries to regain a starting job.
