ITU data shows global internet traffic jumped from roughly 3,660 exabytes in 2020 to about 8,800 exabytes in 2025, with fixed and mobile networks both posting sharp gains.
Fixed-line traffic carried most of that load, rising from around 3,100 exabytes to 7,300 exabytes, while mobile data climbed from about 560 exabytes to 1,500 exabytes.
Asia-Pacific accounted for the largest share in both segments at 50% to 60%, with mobile traffic alone topping 900 exabytes and fixed-network volumes more than doubling.
The Americas and Europe remained the next-largest markets, while Africa and the Arab States logged especially fast relative growth as connectivity and smartphone adoption expanded.
The surge reflects heavier use of digital services, streaming and cloud computing, underscoring rising infrastructure demands across the global digital economy.
